Here are just a few of the 40 regular education, special education, and high school teachers you'll get to know at Arizona Virtual Academy.
Sarah Alexander joined the AZVA team as an Arizona Highly Qualified teacher in March 2006. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Arizona State University. After working with students with special needs in preschool and kindergarten, she completed a post-baccalaureate teacher certification program at Northern Arizona University. Sarah has five years of experience teaching kindergarten and first grade in public schools, as well as an endorsement in ELL and extensive training in reading instruction. She is excited about being part of the unique educational environment provided to AZVA families.
Mary Arnett-Perez began at AZVA as a Highly Qualified teacher in July 2006. She received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Arizona State University. Mary's first two years of teaching were in the Mesa district, where she taught a fifth-grade class and a third-grade gifted class. In 1989 she relocated to Los Angeles, where she taught grades K-8 at a charter school in the San Fernando Valley. Her experience includes teaching math and English Language Development. She has an English Language Development Specialist endorsement on her teaching credential. In 2001 she received her master's degree in educational leadership from the University of California Northridge. As an administrator, Mary supervised elementary teachers who gave instruction in math and other general subjects. This year Mary returned to Arizona; she will be teaching Title 1 Math at AZVA.
Mariam Barth-Paul is originally from Managua, Nicaragua, but grew up in the United States and Canada. She is fluent in three languages (English, French, and Spanish). She obtained her bachelor's degree from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and is currently working on a master's degree in business. For the past five years she has been teaching eighth-grade math and has taught some adjunct faculty classes for Mohave Community College. Mariam will be teaching Spanish at AZVA. She brings fresh vision and life to the language classroom teaching Spanish through immersion and interaction. Mariam is a veteran teacher who is dedicated to individual student success and overall school objectives and goals.
Erin Benefiel-MacDonald, an Arizona native, has taught for the past nine years in Gilbert at Islands Elementary School. While working for Gilbert Public Schools as an Arizona highly qualified teacher, she taught kindergarten and first grade. She graduated from Northern Arizona University with a BS in elementary education, and also earned her master’s in early childhood education there. Erin also teaches early childhood education master’s level classes online for the University of Phoenix. She joins AZVA this fall and is excited to help AZVA families tailor their students' learning to their needs.
Christine Berg is an Arizona native who graduated magna cum laude from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education. She taught second grade in the Chandler Unified School District, where she was involved with tutoring students using the Read Natural program. Christine is thrilled to be working with the enthusiastic staff, students, and parents at the Arizona Virtual Academy.
Elizabeth Bird believes in a child-centered approach to education—that there are as many different ways to learn as there are children. She feels that the best way to teach is to meet students where they are in their learning and build from there. Elizabeth has an MA in education with a specialty in cross-categorical special education. She is dually certified in both K-8 and special education, and has taught students ranging in age from seven to 14. Elizabeth is excited to be part of the AZVA family and looks forward to watching our school bloom and grow for many years to come.
Onowa Bjella joined the AZVA team in July 2007. Onowa has been teaching for the past seven years and has experience working with a variety of age groups in both charter schools and public schools. She earned her undergraduate degree in elementary education from Northern Arizona University. During that time she spent a semester abroad studying in Mexico, and traveled to Germany to complete her student teaching. Onowa has also completed her master’s degree in educational leadership. She currently holds a K-12 Reading Specialist Endorsement, a Middle Grades Language Arts Endorsement, an English as a Second Language Endorsement, and a Principal Certificate. Onowa is very excited to begin working with the parents and students in the AZVA community.
Melissa Briggs graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor's in elementary education. She taught second grade in Rancho Cucamonga, CA for three years before moving to Tucson, AZ. Melissa recently finished her second year teaching third grade in a Tucson public school. Teaching is truly Melissa's passion in life, and she is excited to join the AZVA team.
Christine Burke is a highly qualified teacher who joined AZVA in January 2008. She earned her BA in education from State University of New York at Stony Brook, and then her master's from The University of Illinois at Chicago in special education. Christine has taught in New York, Chicago, and Phoenix for the past 15 years. She loves teaching at AZVA and also teaches teacher preparatory courses for Rio Salado College.
Jennifer Campbell graduated from Arizona State University West in 1995 with a degree in elementary and special education. In 1999, she completed her master's in elementary education with a reading endorsement from Northern Arizona University. Jennifer has experience teaching K-8 students with varying needs, in a variety of educational settings. She is excited to be a part of AZVA, and working with parents to help their kids learn and be successful.
Chelsey Canterbury joined the AZVA special education team in June 2007. Chelsey graduated from Grand Canyon University with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and special education, with a minor in music. She comes to AZVA as a Highly Qualified special education teacher from a self-contained, cross-categorical, public setting. Her professional experience includes teaching students in grades 4-6 with a variety of special needs. Chelsey enjoys finding inventive ways of teaching to aid students in achieving their goals.
Monica Cavanaugh joined the AZVA team in July 2008. She holds a bachelor’s in secondary education from Ottawa University and a master’s in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University. She is highly qualified to teach all levels of mathematics for grades seven through twelve. Monica has nine years experience teaching mathematics at the high school and middle school levels. She is excited about being part of the unique educational environment at AZVA.
Wendy Ciancio joined the AZVA team as an Arizona highly qualified teacher in July 2008. She holds a BS in communications for business with a minor in social studies from Florida State University; a post-baccalaureate teaching certificate from the University of Phoenix; and a master’s degree in educational psychology/counseling from Northern Arizona University. She is highly qualified in the content area of history. Wendy has eight years experience teaching world history, U.S. history, government, and sociology at an excelling, A+ high school. She also has a middle school endorsement qualifying her to teach grades 7-12. In 2007, Wendy was named Teacher of the Year, Ambassador for Excellence by the Arizona Educational Foundation. She is enthusiastic about being a part of this wave-of-the-future in education and is committed to high standards and student achievement.
Diane Claver started with AZVA in 2003 as a K-8 and special education teacher. An Idaho native, she has been working in K12 virtual academies for five years. Currently, she serves as an advisor in the high school program. Diane earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Arizona State University, and is working on a graduate degree in public health policy.
Cinnamon Conrad joined the AZVA team in August 2005. An Arizona native, she taught for several years in preschools, kindergarten, and kindergarten readiness programs before she moved into the classroom. Prior to teaching with AZVA, she taught first, second, and third grades in public and charter schools. A University of Arizona graduate with a degree in animal sciences, she also has a master's in early childhood education from NAU. She is excited to be using technology to facilitate student learning.
Melinda Cook joined the AZVA team in July 2007. She graduated from Arizona State University with a BA in special education. Before coming to AZVA, she taught in the Peoria Unified School District for nine years. Melinda has experience teaching grades 3-8 in the self-contained cross-categorical setting. She looks forward to working with the AZVA families.
Lynnette Crawley joined AZVA in May 2006. She received her bachelor's degree from University of Texas in elementary education and earned her master's degree from Nova Southeastern University in special education. Before coming to AZVA, Lynnette taught fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students for five years, primarily math. For two of those years she worked as a special education teacher, serving students in first, fourth, and fifth grades. Lynnette has worked with students with a number of different challenges such as learning disabilities, dyslexia, autism, mild mental retardation, bipolar disorder, ADHD, ADD, and cerebral palsy. She has a passion for inspiring students to learn.
Erica Cunningham has been with AZVA since 2005. She is currently working as an instructional coordinator for AZVA's high school program. She was also a teacher with AZVA for a year and a half. Erica was a kindergarten teacher at a Valley charter school for five years before working for AZVA. She received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Southwestern College in Phoenix, Arizona. Erica has worked with children of various ages for the last 10 years, including youth camps and youth groups. She completed her student teaching in a first-grade classroom.
Nicholle Dulaney has seven years’ teaching experience in the traditional classroom setting, as well as tutoring students via the online classroom. She graduated with honors with her Bachelor of Arts in elementary education and her Master of Arts in elementary education with bilingual/ESL emphasis from Arizona State University West Campus. She has taught in different districts in Arizona spanning various grade levels. She has taught first grade, fourth grade, and middle school, and is in her second year of schooling her own children at home via the Arizona Virtual Academy.
Cara Dwyer has eight years of elementary teaching experience in Georgia and Arizona. She joins AZVA this year as a K-5 teacher. She received her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from the University of West Georgia. While she enjoyed teaching in the public school classroom, she is most excited about the individualized attention AZVA allows.
Rebekah Dyer has been with AZVA since 2005. She received her bachelor's degree in special education from Arizona State University West. She completed her master's degree in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University in fall 2005. Before joining AZVA, Rebekah worked as a middle school special education teacher for three and a half years in a cross-categorical, self-contained setting. She has a passion for teaching.
Lisa Fary is originally from Florida, but has lived in the Tucson area since 2000. She graduated from Florida State University in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts in English, and later earned a master's degree in special education from Northern Arizona University in 2005. Before joining the AZVA faculty, Lisa worked at an alternative school for non-traditional students. She holds Arizona certifications in special education and secondary English.
Rebecca Felber graduated cum laude from the University of Arizona, where she received her BA in elementary education. Since then she has taught in the Arizona and California public school systems as well as charter schools. Rebecca is an Arizona Highly Qualified teacher with specialized training in CLIP and Spalding reading programs. She has worked with kids from very diverse backgrounds, which enables her to be responsive and flexible to individual students’ needs.
Amanda Finney joined the AZVA staff in July 2008, where she currently teaches high school Spanish. Graduating summa cum laude, she earned her BS in Spanish education with a minor in English education from Northern Arizona University. Amanda studied for a semester in Cuernavaca, Mexico, where her love for language and culture grew, and where she committed to sharing that love with others. She has previously taught Spanish and English for four years in the Flagstaff Unified school District, but is excited to support an option that provides exceptional education from the home.
Danielle Girnius joined the AZVA team in March 2008 and brings with her a wealth of teaching experience. She is a highly qualified special education teacher who holds a bachelor's in special education from Arizona State University, as well as a master's in educational psychology from Northern Arizona University. She has been working towards her school psychologist certificate from Capella University. Before coming to AZVA, Danielle worked in Arizona schools for 11 years. She has experience working with a variety of students including specific learning disabilities, multiple handicaps, MR, autism, emotional disabilities, and other health impairments. She is excited to become a member of the exceptional team at AZVA.
Lindsey Gibson joined the AZVA team as a Highly Qualified teacher in October 2007. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Nazarene University, and has a cross-categorical certificate in special education from Rio Salado College. For the past four years, she has taught middle school students with developmental disabilities in the Kyrene School District. Lindsey has a passion for helping students to achieve their goals and is excited to be a part of the AZVA team.
Amanda Glantz, AZVA lead teacher, has been teaching for 10 years. She received her BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1997. She furthered her study of education and in 1999 received a multiple-subject teaching credential with honors from National University, where she worked with children and adults with developmental disabilities. Upon completion of her California teaching credential she taught fifth grade ESL students. Since moving to Arizona in 2000 she has taught fifth and sixth grades, organized a summer school for grades three through six, taught gifted math, and tutored grades two through eight.
Christy Gourley has seven years of teaching experience in elementary education. After graduating from Grand Canyon University with a Bachelor of Science in elementary education, she began teaching in the Washington Elementary School District. During her seven years in the district, she taught kindergarten, first and sixth grades, and general music. Christy has received training in Reading First, DIBELS, Diagnostic Reading Assessments, and Multisensory Language Enrichment. She is excited to be a teacher at the Arizona Virtual Academy and to have the opportunity to encourage and support students in their pursuit of educational excellence.
Angie Granillo is a 1997 graduate of NAU and is Highly Qualified in math and science. After graduation, she taught fifth and sixth grades in Scottsdale, and a 4/5 multi-age looping class in Chandler, Arizona. She taught abroad in South Korea for one year, then returned to Lakeside, where she team-taught fourth and fifth grades. She is thrilled to be able to support AZVA families in the continuing education of their students.
Laura Griffin grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and attended Western Michigan University. She transferred to the U of A and spent her junior year Spain before receiving her B.A. in Spanish linguistics. In December 2000, she received her post-baccalaureate in secondary education from the University of Phoenix. Since then, she has taught everything from ELL to English to yoga before teaching Spanish. She has a passion for languages, traveling, cultures, and healthy living. She finds teaching to be extremely gratifying, and constantly stresses the power of positive thinking to her students who doubt their abilities to acquire another language. Laura loves to chat with students in Spanish, and encourages them to attend Elluminate Live! online sessions to practice.
Brenda Hardin has taught kindergarten and third grade in public schools for five years. In addition, she has experience tutoring students from K-10 in private and small group settings. Brenda received her BS in elementary education and early childhood education from Brigham Young University. She also has received her MA in curriculum and instruction from the University of Phoenix.
Carol Hillmann joined the AZVA team as an Arizona highly qualified middle school math teacher in July 2007. She graduated magna cum laude from William Paterson University in New Jersey with a BA in special education and elementary education. She holds a master's in educational technology from Arizona State University, and earned her administrative leadership certification from the University of Phoenix. During her more than 30 years as a teacher and an administrator, Carol has taught most grade levels, served on several educational committees, presented many workshops, and supervised teachers. She is excited to partner with parents at AZVA to help each child have a positive and successful educational experience.
Bonnie Hoffert joined AZVA in July 2008. She is an Arizona highly qualified teacher, who holds a master’s in English education from Arizona State University. A native of North Dakota, she earned her bachelor's from Minot State University. Bonnie has taught English for 38 years in North Dakota and Arizona. One of the highlights of her career is her Blue Ribbon teaching award from the president of the United States in 1996. Bonnie was also a runner up for Arizona State Teacher of the Year, as well as for the Arizona English Teachers’ Association Teacher of the Year award. She is thrilled to join the virtual world and has already discovered the great potential of this cutting-edge approach to education.
Julia Houston-Cunningham is excited about beginning her tenth year in education as a new member of the Arizona Virtual Academy staff. After completing her student teaching on the Navajo Reservation in Northern Arizona and graduating from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, she moved to Arizona permanently. Julia has taught in public school districts and charter schools in the Phoenix area. She is truly looking forward to working with AZVA families to provide a fantastic, quality education for our students!
Kim Hughes joined the AZVA team as an Arizona highly qualified teacher in August 2006. She holds a BS degree in biology from Arizona State University; a post-baccalaureate teaching certificate from Ottawa University, and an MA in teaching from Grand Canyon University. She is highly qualified to teach biology, mathematics, and chemistry for grades seven through twelve. Kim has six years experience teaching mathematics at the high school and community college levels, as well as four years teaching sciences at the middle and high school levels. She is excited about being part of the unique educational environment at AZVA.
Kara Huskey came to AZVA in July 2006. She holds a BS in mathematics from the University of Wyoming. She has been teaching math for the past 12 years and has taught everything from middle school math through AP® Calculus. Kara teaches math because math students very often need a great teacher to explain the tough stuff, and she's great at explaining things clearly.
Jodee Jacobs joined the AZVA team as a highly qualified teacher in 2007, bringing with her ten years of teaching experience. Jodee has worked as a seventh grade language arts teacher and a learning disabilities teacher, as well as with moderate to severe special education students. She is currently one of our high school special education teachers. Jodee is originally from Washington state, and received her BA in cross-categorical K-12 special education and elementary education from Central Washington University. She is currently in the process of completing her master's in teaching and leadership in educational technology through Ashford University.
Adria Jimenez is an Arizona native who graduated from Arizona State University with a BA in early childhood education. She earned an MA in curriculum and instruction from Northern Arizona University. Adria taught second grade for four years in the Chandler Unified School District, where she was involved with tutoring students in language arts, as well as participating as a tutor to English language learners. She was also the gifted liaison for her school, assisting both parents and teachers working with gifted students. In 2008, Adria was chosen as one of the César E. Chávez Educators of the Year by the Sí Se Puede Foundation. Adria truly enjoys teaching and strives to make learning fun, yet challenging, for her students. She is a firm believer that a student is most successful when parents, students, and teachers all work together. Adria joined AZVA in July 2008 and is looking forward to partnering with parents and helping each child shine.
Erin Jones-Cunningham has worked in the field of education for eight years. She has experience teaching first, second, and sixth grade language arts. She has also worked as a school social worker with students in transition. This is her second year with AZVA. Erin enjoys working with students of all ages, and is excited to have this opportunity to work with both students and their families.
Sherri Kerr, K-8 teacher, has been teaching with AZVA since January 2008. She earned her master’s degree in education from Northern Arizona University and is highly qualified and certified in K-8 elementary education, 7-12 secondary education/biology, and K-12 special education. She has over fifteen years of teaching experience and has volunteered for several years as a youth group worker. She also worked overseas as a youth ministry director. Sherri is excited to be part of the AZVA team.
Stacy Kirschner joined AZVA in July 2008, and holds a BA in elementary education from Miami University. She has spent her last eight years teaching middle school science and social studies. Stacsy was a member of the science curriculum adoption committee, evaluating and recommending new materials for Scottsdale Unified School District. She also served as a mentor teacher, supporting and leading new teachers towards success. While teaching, Stacy earned her ESL endorsement and highly qualified status. She is thrilled to become a part of the AZVA family.
Celeste Kolinchak is originally from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, but she has lived in the Phoenix area for the last 10 years. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Alberta in Edmonton and her Master of Education from Northern Arizona University. She has taught in the special education field for seven years with students of varying ages and disabilities. She is pleased to be a part of AZVA and looks forward to helping her students be successful in their learning.
Brenda Kreitinger has been an educator for 15 years. She graduated from the University of Florida. In Florida, she worked with multi-handicapped, medically fragile students. Later she moved to Alaska and taught multi-handicapped students and learning disabled students in grades K-12. She also had the opportunity to teach junior high language arts and social studies in Alaska. After moving to Arizona, she taught in Gilbert as a primary regular education classroom teacher, and as an LD resource room teacher for grades 1-6.
Jena Kugel began her ninth year teaching when she joined AZVA in July 2007. She is a Highly Qualified K-8 teacher and college professor. She has taught kindergarten and first and second grades as well as middle school. At the collegiate level, Jena teaches introductory writing and communication classes as well as graduate-level education courses. She has taught in public, online, and private school settings, and she is trained in a variety of approaches to instruction. She loves teaching, and is passionate about helping students find their special gifts. Jena earned her undergraduate degree in communications, with an emphasis in journalism, from Florida Southern College, and her master's degree from the University of Phoenix. She has been nominated three times for Teacher of the Year, and has been included in Who's Who Among America's Teachers twice (2004-2005 and 2006-2007).
Nicole Larochelle is originally from Royal Oak, Michigan, and her family moved to Arizona in 2005. Her experience as an educator includes one year with AZVA and two years as a third grade teacher. Three years prior to teaching in Arizona, Nicole taught as a substitute teacher in Birmingham, Michigan. In addition to her experience in the public schools, Nicole has worked as an office manager and as a child safety technician, installing car seats for a General Motors national auto show. Prior to that she was an off-road specialist for the Hummer H2 on General Motors' Auto Show in Motion National Tour.
Sarah Lawrence joined AZVA in spring 2007. She received her degree from Southwestern College in Phoenix. After many years working with children in school readiness programs, she moved to the public school system. Sarah taught for three years in the Paradise Valley Unified School District and has conducted private tutoring sessions for several years. She is excited to become a partner with families in enriching their children's education.
Alissa Leamon, a Highly Qualified teacher, joined the special education staff at the Arizona Virtual Academy in April 2006. She brings 10 years of experience teaching at elementary through high-school grade levels. Alissa received a master's degree in reading, language, and learning disabilities and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Arizona, and has continued her education with extensive coursework in reading and language. Alissa enjoys working with the staff and all the wonderful families at AZVA and believes it to be an exceptional educational program that truly cares about students and their progress in school.
Linda Lehmkuhl has been with AZVA since 2005 as a K-8 teacher and lead teacher. She currently holds the position of parent and staff relations manager. Linda has 16 years of experience as a teacher. She is also a certified principal and has three years of experience as an assistant principal. She holds a master's degree in educational leadership and a bachelor's degree in elementary education. Linda has been nominated for Yavapai County Teacher of the Year and Arizona Rural & Small Schools Teacher of the Year. She has several copyrights and a patent for the ABC Fundamental Learning System: Method and System for Instructing and Motivating Students, which was nominated for the Arizona School Board Association's Golden Bell Award in 2003.
Lisa Leo teaches World History in AZVA's High School program. She began her teaching journey in the fall of 1991 after earning a BA from Grand Canyon University. She has taught civics, PE, life skills, speech, and science at Prescott Mile High Middle School and Heritage Middle School (in Chino Valley). She served as advisor to National Junior Honor Society, Student Council, Yearbook, a movie club, and a dance club. During her rookie year, Lisa and a colleague traveled to Washington, DC, with 19 eighth-graders during spring break. This trip became an annual event, and continues to this day.
Annie Lilly is a graduate of Prescott College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in elementary education. She is certified to teach K-8, and has experience teaching K-3. Annie has taught in the Peoria Unified, Isaac School, and Laveen elementary school districts.
Laura Lilly received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Prescott College. She has taught students from kindergarten through adult age, and before joining AZVA taught specialized classes to teenagers and adults. Laura has been a first-grade teacher and substitute for primary grades in public schools. As an Arizona Highly Qualified teacher, Laura is committed to a cooperative partnership between herself and AZVA families, which she believes provides an exceptional learning environment for her students.
Morgan Linebarger is excited to join the Title 1 Math team at AZVA. Morgan moved to Phoenix in August 2002 to attend Grand Canyon University. She graduated summa cum laude, with a Bachelor of Science degree in both elementary and special education. She has taught as a Highly Qualified special education teacher in Arizona for two consecutive years, working with special needs students in grades 1-5. Morgan has always had a passion for students with special needs. She especially enjoys finding fun and exciting ways to introduce students to math.
Tina Littell graduated from Arizona State University with a bachelor's degree in business management, and later earned a post-baccalaureate degree in education. She taught first and second grades in the Chandler Unified School District, and is currently is involved in the Girl Scout organization as a troop leader, a neighborhood recruitment specialist, and an area event coordinator. In the past few years, she has written several teaching guides for the popular desert-themed children's series Tomas the Tortoise. She also edited and designed a children's guide to the desert seasons and recently wrote and edited a teacher's lesson plan for the history of Las Vegas.
Holly Love attended Arizona State University to pursue a career in special education. In the fall of 1999 she received her BAE in special education. She started teaching students who had difficulty learning at the high school level. After teaching for a couple of years she decided to go back and receive her master's degree in special education from Arizona State University in 2003, with an emphasis in the area of mental retardation. She also has a background teaching students who have a variety of multiple handicaps, including MR, autism, ED, etc. As a new special education teacher to AZVA this fall, she is excited to bring her experience into the virtual setting.
Kayleen Marble joined AZVA in fall 2006 as a K-8 teacher. She is now a lead teacher and teaches writing classes in Elluminate Live! Online sessions. She has been an educator for the past 12 years in a variety of modalities. In Georgia, she taught fourth grade as a science specialist, grades 3-5 in remedial education, and a multi-age third- and fourth-grade class. Kayleen's most recent teaching was a traditional third-grade classroom in Gilbert. Her experience teaching has spanned several states as her husband was in the military. Kayleen was also an English teacher in Japan for three years and has taught piano lessons for eight. She has a master's degree in education from the University of Phoenix.
Bob Marley joined the AZVA team in July 2006. A native of the Pacific Northwest, Bob graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education. As a Highly Qualified teacher, Bob is certified in Arizona to teach special education in grades K-12 as well as elementary education in grades K-8. Before joining AZVA, Bob taught grades 4-6 as a special education resource teacher in a cross-categorical resource room setting, and as a self-contained classroom teacher for students with emotional disorders in grades 4 and 5. As a special education teacher, he developed expertise in administration of diagnostic academic assessments and utilization of data to create goals, objectives, modifications, and accommodations as part of students' Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). Through creating IEPs that were tailored to the individual students' needs, Bob attained a great deal of experience in creating customized learning paths for students in mathematics. A huge proponent of lifelong learning, Bob has attended a vast number of workshops and seminars on the topic of effective math strategies, including study under two well-known master math teachers from California, Guy Foresman and Brad Fulton. Bob is currently pursuing a Master of Education degree in library media.
Emily McMenemy is a special education teacher who brings seven years of experience teaching elementary to high school aged students with varying abilities. She graduated summa cum laude from ASU West with a bachelor’s in special education and an endorsement in cross-categorical special education. Emily looks forward to working with families that have chosen AZVA to educate their children.
Jennifer Melton has been teaching with AZVA since 2005 and currently serves as a K-5 teacher and teacher training specialist. Jennifer earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Arizona State University and is certified in elementary and special education. A teacher with 10 years of experience, she has held positions at the Center for Neurodevelopmental Studies in Glendale, as well as elementary and special education positions within the Washington, Peoria, and Flagstaff school districts. Jennifer also served as the director of a large daycare and preschool before joining AZVA. She is an advocate for supporting parents who have a desire to provide an exceptional educational environment at home for their children through AZVA.
Theresa Merrill was raised in Maine and has lived all over the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. She holds a Bachelor of Education degree in elementary education, with a Math Endorsement, from the University of Alaska and has taught at the elementary and middle-school levels. This is her second year as an Arizona Highly Qualified teacher with AZVA and she loves the success AZVA helps bring to its students as well as the experience of working in a virtual environment. Theresa is excited to be a part of the Title 1 math team this year.
Anita Metcalfe joined AZVA as a highly qualified teacher in 2008. She holds a BS in secondary education with a life science/biology major, and is working on a master's degree in counseling. She also holds a structured English immersion endorsement. Anita taught science for ten years in the Yuma Union school district. In her tenure there, she won Teacher of the Month and was nominated for Teacher of the Year. She was also recognized by her students for Who’s Who Among High School Teachers. Anita is highly qualified to teach biology and earth science.
Christie Mitchell has experience owning and operating a pre-school, teaching fifth grade, working with children in special education, and has been a home-school parent. She graduated from Northern Arizona University, summa cum laude, with a BS in elementary education. Christie is passionate about education, and particularly excited about the opportunity and encouragement AZVA gives to individuals to take responsibility for their education and learn without limits.
Debra Monroe is joining the AZVA staff for the 2007-2008 school year. She has taught for eight years at the high school and college levels in Arizona. Debra graduated from the University of Toledo with a Bachelor of Education in secondary education, majoring in biology. She then went on to the University of Arizona, earned a Master of Science in biology, and defended her thesis about testing specimens for the West Nile virus. Debra worked for the Yuma Union High School District for seven years, teaching earth science and anatomy and physiology, and she received the First Year Teacher of the Year award at Cibola High School. She then went on to teach anatomy and physiology at Arizona Western College for two years, where she designed and instructed an online curriculum for the science department. Debra was most recently honored by the Flinn Foundation as one of 20 Arizona teachers to receive the Distinguished Educator Award for her outstanding dedication and service. She is truly excited about the opportunity to join the quality educational team at the Arizona Virtual Academy.
Beverly Morris has taught education at the elementary and college levels for more than 14 years. She taught kindergarten and grades 2-4 in various public schools for nine years, as well as behavioral science at the college level for five years. Beverly received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Eastern New Mexico University and a master's degree in elementary education from North Arizona University. She has had extensive reading instruction and has an endorsement as a Reading Specialist. Beverly is delighted to be a part of the AZVA team.
Vanessa Moseley joined the AZVA team as an Arizona Highly Qualified K-6 teacher in July 2007. She graduated from the University of San Diego with a B.A. in diversified liberal arts, and then moved to Arizona to begin her career. She taught for three years at Tesseract Private School, and for six in the Paradise Valley Unified School District. She is enthusiastic and grateful to continue her love for education by working at the Arizona Virtual Academy!
Christina Murphy earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education with an emphasis in science at the University of Northern Arizona. She began her teaching career in the Tri-City area after receiving her master's degree in educational leadership at NAU. Christy spent two years teaching seventh-grade science and coaching volleyball and basketball in Chino Valley. She then spent two years teaching grades 6-8 and coaching volleyball at Liberty Traditional School in Prescott Valley.
Veronica Murray has three years of experience as a classroom language arts and honors English teacher with Gilbert Public Schools, and taught ninth-grade English and social studies as a private tutor in the student's home for one year. Veronica received concurrent bachelor’s degrees in secondary education and English from Arizona State University, and she is currently in the process of getting a master’s degree in English from Northern Arizona University. Veronica’s love for teaching has led her to Arizona Virtual Academy where she hopes to pass on her enthusiasm for learning to her students.
Meghan Navarro joined the AZVA team as an Arizona highly qualified teacher in July 2008. She is currently working as an advisor and teacher in the high school. Meghan holds a BA degree in education from Arizona State University and is working towards an MA in educational guidance counseling from Ottawa University. She has five years experience teaching at the middle school level. Meghan is thrilled to have the opportunity to work at AZVA and help students through their path to adulthood.
Carrie O'Donnell has nine years of teaching experience. Carrie graduated from Arizona State University with a bachelor's degree in elementary education, along with an ESL Endorsement. She received her master's degree in bilingual/multi-cultural education from Northern Arizona University. Carrie has worked for Pendergast School District, Amphitheater School District, and Mesa Unified School District. She has taught grades 1-2 and 4-8, with a diverse population of students. Carrie is excited to be a teacher at Arizona Virtual Academy and looks forward to the opportunity to work with students and families to ensure a positive and successful educational experience.
Kimberly Patters has seven years of teaching experience within the Scottsdale and Gilbert Public Schools. After graduating from the University of Maryland with a BA in special education, she worked in primary and secondary resource settings. She also graduated from Arizona State with a master's degree in higher education administration. She holds certifications in all areas of special education and regular education, has a provisional ELL Endorsement, and has an MA emphasis in athletic administration. Kimberly most recently left a third grade teaching position to join the Arizona Virtual Academy and is very excited about the challenge to help her students reach academic success.
Jeanna Pignatiello joined the AZVA team in October 2006. Originally from Chicago, she transferred to Arizona State University where she received a BS degree in justice studies. Her dream was to attend law school, but after graduating, Jeanna accepted a job teaching reading to elementary students. She quickly fell in love with teaching, and returned to ASU to get her post-baccalaureate certificate in elementary education. She joins AZVA with five years of teaching experience in both elementary and middle school settings for grades 1 and 3 and 5-8. Jeanna has a focus in ESL, literature, and language arts, and has her SEI and ESL Endorsements. She is pursuing a master's degree in educational leadership at Northern Arizona University. Her goal is to engage her students and their families in a learning environment that is safe and respectful, and that provides endless opportunities for growth.
Melissa Porter is an Arizona native who recently relocated back to Arizona after spending 16 years in San Diego. She graduated from the University of San Diego with a BA in communications, and she received her post-baccalaureate degree in elementary education from Northern Arizona University. She spent 10 years teaching in the Del Mar Union School District and 2 years in Paradise Valley Unified School District. Melissa is very excited to be starting another exciting and challenging year teaching with AZVA.
Abby Rice, an Arizona native, graduated with a bachelor's degree in zoology from Arizona State University and then earned her master’s degree in education from the University of Phoenix. She also has a master's degree in science education from Northern Arizona University. Before joining AZVA in July 2006, Abby taught middle school science in the Deer Valley School District for six years. She loves teaching and looks forward to helping students reach their full potential.
Connie Riggs joined AZVA in July 2004. She began working with elementary students on literacy awareness projects when she was in high school and has been involved in education in various capacities ever since. She has taught preschool, kindergarten, and a first- and second-grade combination class, and has been a substitute teacher for grades K-5 and a teacher's assistant. Connie established a kindergarten readiness program, tutored students, and volunteered in K-6 classrooms. She is Arizona-certified and Highly Qualified. She has a bachelor's degree in elementary education with minors in language arts and social science from Prescott College. She is currently working toward a master's degree in reading curriculum and instruction from Grand Canyon University.
Tracy Ripley joined the AZVA team as an Arizona Highly Qualified teacher in March 2007. She holds a BA in elementary education from Arizona State University and a master's in elementary education in middle school mathematics from Walden University. Tracy taught fifth, seventh, and eighth grades in the Tolleson Elementary School District for three years, and is excited about being part of the unique educational experience provided by AZVA.
Shabnam Rodosta joined the AZVA team in July 2006. Her teaching experience includes two years of full-day kindergarten in the Alhambra School District. She has a bachelor's degree in education with a specialization in social science, which she received from Ottawa University in 2004. She has extensive training in phonics, including Spaulding Phonics. Shabnam is currently working on her master's degree in school guidance counseling, and is incredibly excited to be working with families during their lifelong educational journey!
Amber Lea Russell is a proud Arizona native. She spent much of her youth involved in the performing arts, culminating in a BS in music-vocal performance from the University of Arizona. After performing with choirs and choruses around the country, as well as taking an opportunity to teach in South Korea, Amber settled back in Tucson and began teaching at the elementary school level. Bitten by the teaching bug, Amber completed her master's in elementary education in 2002. She has taught first and third grades, and spent two years as a fine arts integration specialist at a K-8 school, allowing her to combine her love of the arts with her passion for teaching. Amber is excited to expand her teaching experience to the virtual classroom as she joins AZVA.
Pamela Scofield is a Highly Qualified, veteran teacher who was born and raised in Arizona. She received her BA and MA degrees in education at Arizona State University. During her more than 28 years of teaching, she has taught all grade levels, tutored, worked with homebound students, supervised 11 student teachers, served on many educational committees, tutored college athletes and adults learning to read, and assisted with curriculum adoptions. Pamela is absolutely thrilled to be a part of AZVA and is looking forward to encouraging a love of learning in her students.
Marsha Segard, ALP teacher, is a Highly Qualified educator who joined AZVA in 2005. She attended the University of Utah and Arizona State University, receiving her BA degree in education from ASU. She is currently working on her master's degree in educational technology. Marsha has served for 23 years in public schools in grades one through seven, and is a robotics club coach. She is very excited to be a part of AZVA. With her background in technology, she naturally sees online education as a great way to open the world of learning to students of all kinds.
Amanda Segura is an experienced leader and teacher in elementary education. She has taught first, second, and third grades in Arizona and South Dakota; and has been involved in numerous academic organizations, clubs, and programs. She received a B.S. in elementary education with a minor in early childhood from Chadron State College and is currently working toward her Master of Education degree in elementary education at Northern Arizona University. She is new to AZVA, having joined the staff in July 2006. Amanda is beginning her eighth year of teaching.
Jessi Sigander joined AZVA in July 2007. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in education from Southwestern College in 2003, and her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Phoenix in 2005. Jessi is certified in elementary and secondary education, with endorsements in English and history. Before joining AZVA she taught high school English in charter and public school settings for four years. Jessi is enthusiastic about learning and working with people.
Rachel Smith is an Arizona native. She graduated cum laude from Arizona State University, with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. She taught first grade for three years in the Washington Elementary School District. She has a passion for working with students and making a difference in their education. Rachel is excited to be working with AZVA and continuing to make a difference in her students' education.
Heather Stalnaker has five years of elementary teaching experience in Arizona. She is thrilled to join AZVA this year as a K-8 teacher. Heather has taught kindergarten, first grade, and music for all grades K-8 in the public school system. She has completed training in Spalding, DIBELS, and SEI, and received her bachelor’s degree from Northern Arizona University in elementary education. Heather loves teaching and is excited to partner with families to help each student reach their full potential.
Silvia Starrs has lived in the Phoenix metropolitan area all of her life, and has been a certified teacher for the public school system since 1992. Her background includes pre-school, daycare, banking, and insurance, but her favorite job is teaching and partnering with parents to help children excel in education. Silvia is a Highly Qualified teacher who joined AZVA in 2006 as a K-8 general education teacher and is now happy to join the Title 1 math team.
Lindsay Statler is an Arizona native. She graduated from Northern Arizona University with a major in biology and an emphasis in secondary education, and followed that with a master's in educational leadership. She spent nine years teaching science in the Cave Creek Unified School district. This is Lindsay's second year with AZVA.
Daniel Stone is an experienced elementary teacher whose diverse background includes public and charter school teaching. A graduate of Liberty University and the recipient of a BS in teaching English as a second language, Daniel has also completed the Bible program at Word of Life Bible Institute and a post-baccalaureate at Rio Salado. After beginning at the middle-school level teaching language arts, Daniel spent three years teaching third grade. His love for students and families has brought him to AZVA to work with adults and children in the pursuit of excellence in education.
David Szabo has taught AP® biology, chemistry, physics, health online for eight years, and has instructed students around the globe in a virtual setting using Elluminate Live!. He has a master's degree in educational administration from Illinois State University, a master's degree in biology from the University of Illinois at Springfield, and a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, biological sciences, and chemistry from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He is passionate about working with students in the online environment and helping them attain their dreams.
Lori Talavera graduated from Northern Arizona University with a BS in elementary education. She has minors in English and math, and is certified on elementary and secondary levels. Lori has a total of ten years teaching experience and has taught elementary, junior, and senior high school, as well as adult education. She is currently working on a master's in educational leadership. Lori has a passion for teaching and is very happy to be part of the AZVA team.
Nicole Tiley is joining the AZVA staff for the 2008 school year. She received her bachelor’s degree from Pennsylvania State University and her master’s degree from Northern Arizona University in special education. She also has a supervisor’s certificate in administration. Nicole has taught special education for the last five years, working with elementary and middle school students. She also received the Westside Impact Teacher of the Year Award, as well as the Rodel Finalist Award. She is excited about working with AZVA families and staff.
Alysha Tinsley joined AZVA in July of 2007. She graduated magna cum laude from Arizona State University with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. Since then she has taught for five years at a local charter school. She taught first and second grade, as well as a combined class of both grades. Alysha is an Arizona Highly Qualified teacher with specialized training in the Spalding reading program, for which she was the lead teacher for the past two years. She is thrilled to be a teacher with Arizona Virtual Academy.
Patricia Tobin has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from California State University of Long Beach and a master's degree in art from California State University of Fullerton. She has taught in the Arizona public school system for more than six years as an art educator in grades 6-8. In addition to holding a certificate in grades K-12, she also teaches adjunct faculty courses for the Arizona Maricopa colleges. Patricia is also completing a doctoral degree in postsecondary and adult education.
Amy Tregaskes is an Arizona highly qualified secondary math teacher. She graduated with a BS in mathematics education from Northern Arizona University. She has taught in both the high school and community college settings. Amy comes to AZVA with 14 years of teaching experience. As she puts it, it's not that she loves math as much as she loves to teach math. Amy believes that everyone can learn math; it is just a matter of finding the right tools.
Dan Tucker graduated from the University of Arizona with a bachelor's degree in fine art, and received his secondary certification from the University of Phoenix. Dan joined AZVA in July 2007, and brings nine years of experience helping students overcome their fears and succeed in math. He is very excited about exploring the potential of the online environment with his students.
Kelly Van Sande joined AZVA as a highly qualified teacher at the start of the 2008-2009 school year. She received her BS degree in music education from Grand Canyon University, and an ME from Northcentral University. Kelly has previous classroom teaching experience, including time spent in charter schools and large school districts. She is excited to teach in the unique environment that is AZVA.
Ruth VanScoyk is beginning her third year teaching with AZVA, which she thoroughly enjoys. Before joining AZVA, she taught grades 1 and 2 for seven years. She has a bachelor's degree from Prescott College and a master's degree from Northern Arizona University in education.
Shannon Veal has been with AZVA since August 2006. She holds a bachelor's degree in history and sociology education from Brigham Young University and a master's degree in secondary education from Northern Arizona University. Shannon has taught in Arizona schools for 11 years in a variety of classes, including American history, AP® American history, world history, criminal justice, sociology, government, economics, and student council. She has also have taught sociology and American history as dual enrollment courses. In addition to holding a secondary certificate, Shannon teaches adjunct faculty courses for Maricopa Community Colleges.
Sharon Wakefield has 20 years of combined teaching experience in the classroom and home school setting. She graduated summa cum laude from Northern Arizona University with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics. She taught algebra through AP® calculus in the Tempe Union High School District for many years and co-founded a K-8 private school. She is excited to be a Title 1 math teacher and to partner with families to pursue an excellent education in a virtual environment.
Jeannie West has a lifelong passion for working with children. She earned her Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Northern Arizona University and taught second grade in Flagstaff for four years. During this time, she continued her education and received an ESL Endorsement. Jeannie continued working with children even after becoming a stay-at-home mom. She has given piano lessons, tutored, and taught at various church functions, including a mission trip to the island of Roatan, Honduras, to assist with a vacation Bible school. Jeannie is very excited for the opportunity to work with and support AZVA families as they journey through the education process.
Sharla Wiatt taught second grade in the Chandler Unified School District for 11 years. She graduated summa cum laude from Arizona State University with a bachelor's degree in education, and she has an Early Childhood Endorsement. Sharla then received a Master of Education degree from Northern Arizona University. She has been involved with tutoring students in reading and has guided students in the Read Natural Program to strengthen their reading fluency. While teaching, Sharla has learned how important it is to partner with parents to help each child succeed and get the most out of learning. She believes that when learning is fun and challenging, kids get excited about it and excel. She is excited to partner with parents at Arizona Virtual Academy to help each child have a successful and enjoyable learning experience.
Shauna Wolynia joined the team at AZVA as a Highly Qualified teacher in August 2005. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education and enjoys the virtual environment. Her enthusiasm for the superb curriculum and opportunities for students schooled at home continues to grow. Shauna has taught for more than five years in a variety of settings in grades 1-8. Her biggest joys in education were enhancing writing skills and creating mathematicians. She is thrilled to continue the Title 1 Math program at AZVA.
Cindy Wright has 10 years of experience as a special educator. Currently, she is the Title 1 math lead teacher. She has taught all curriculum levels, from preschool through high school, in Arizona and California. Cindy is Highly Qualified in special education and elementary education. Teaching mathematics is her personal favorite, and she is thrilled to be part of Arizona Virtual Academy's Title 1 math program. Cindy graduated from Arizona State University, summa cum laude, with a bachelor's degree in elementary education and special education. She has been with AZVA since August 2005 and enjoys teaching in the virtual environment.
Kimberly Young has a bachelor's degree in education from Arizona State University West and a master's degree from Northern Arizona University. She comes to AZVA as a highly experienced K-8 teacher, having spent a majority of her career teaching grades 4 and 5, and is thrilled to work with the K12 curriculum.
Sara Zadorozny grew up in San Diego, California, and went to the School of Creative and Performing arts, where she was involved in the art, photography, and music programs. She graduated from college with a degree in art and marketing, but soon went back to school to get her teaching credential. Since then, Sara has taught for more than five years in a public school setting, spending most of her time in a fourth grade SEI (English immersion) program. While teaching, Sara was honored with the Exceptional Educator award for her school site. She was also the technology trainer for school staff, including teachers and student aides. Sara earned her master’s degree in learning and technology in 2005.
Julia Zoutendyk has been with AZVA since January 2006 and is currently an "intake teacher," which means she works with brand-new families to help get them off to the best start possible. Julia loves working at AZVA, and loves helping families become independent and successful. Her favorite part of the job is when she hears students' enthusiasm when they finally "get" a difficult concept. Julia believes whole-heartedly in the K12 curriculum, and she loves to help students and learning coaches embrace all that K12 and AZVA have to offer.
