Who We Are - Overview

Our School at a Glance

Supported by a local Hawaii grassroots community, the Hawaii Technology Academy (HTA) combines the accountability of public schooling with the highest-quality distance-learning curriculum available to provide an innovative, highly effective education for Hawaii students. HTA is a state-approved, public school program. The curriculum is provided by K12 and accessed via both the K¹² Online School (OLS), and more traditional methods. For grades K-8, hands-on materials—including beautifully illustrated textbooks and all of the materials necessary for science labs—are delivered right to your door.

The mission of the Hawaii Technology Academy (HTA) is to utilize research-based technology applications and meaningful teacher/student/parent involvement to provide an innovative hybrid model of public charter school education adapted to the needs of elementary, middle, and high school students who reside in Hawaii.

HTA is a model of “blended” instruction—face-to-face instruction within a centrally located Oahu Learning Center, combined with learning time spent individually or in small groups away from the center. Students who live too far from the Oahu Learning Center will attend HTA as virtual students, having face-to-face or videoconference meetings with their teacher. All students and their parents/other responsible adult will have daily access to their teacher via telephone, the online school, and e-mail.

The Hawaii Technology Academy will increase the education options for Hawaii’s students by providing them with a comprehensive curriculum that meets Hawaii stadards. HTA will use state-of-the-art online and hands-on instructional materials to provide a high-quality, innovative, and effective public school education with individualized learning approaches.

Teachers, parents/other responsible adults, and administrators will strive to engage students in constructive activities that will educate the whole student. For instance, there will be frequent opportunities for socialization with fellow HTA students including special interest clubs, community-based projects, and field trips.

Who is This Intended For?

The Hawaii Technology Academy will serve students in grades K-10 on Oahu in 2008-2009 and will expand to include students on the neighbor islands in the coming years.

What Are the Costs?

Because it will be part of the public school system, HTA will be tuition free including the entire curriculum, a loaner computer and printer, and Internet access.
